The Khalistan movement is a Sikh separatist movement that seeks to create a sovereign state called Khālistān or "Land of the Pure" . The movement peaked in the 1980s and 1990s and was marked by violence, including bombings, assassinations, kidnappings, and massacres of civilians .
The movement resulted in nearly 22,000 deaths of Sikhs and Hindus alike, including approximately 12,000 civilians .
Recent arrests point to Pakistan's game plan of reviving the Khalistan movement by using the local criminal network in India .
