Why UN Nuclear Chief Visit Pakistan during This Situation

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief, Rafael Grossi, visited Pakistan from February 15-16 to discuss the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. During his visit, he praised Pakistan's 'impeccable' nuclear safety record. The visit was unrelated to the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief, Rafael Grossi, visited Pakistan from February 15-16 to discuss the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. During his visit, he praised Pakistan's 'world-class' and 'impeccable' nuclear safety record and saw promising prospects for nuclear energy in the country.

IAEA activities in Pakistan

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been actively collaborating with the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to promote the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear technology. This includes increasing collaboration in peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology, providing support for technical cooperation through national and regional programme activities, and assessing the effectiveness of Pakistan's regulatory body for nuclear safety. The IAEA also works with the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) to provide information on Pakistan's nuclear power profile.

IAEA safeguards in Pakistan

The IAEA has been providing safeguards to a number of nuclear reactors in Pakistan since 1962, and the country has signed item-specific safeguards agreements with the IAEA. The IAEA's safeguards system includes material accounting, containment and surveillance, and on-site inspection, and Pakistan is working to improve its nuclear security culture to meet international standards. The country also has measures in place to secure weapons and material outside of IAEA safeguards.
